Testimony of a Former Jehovah’s Witness

Testimony of a Former Jehovah’s Witness

After going from one place to another… I was born in San Salvador into a family of unbelievers. When I was 14, my father, who had always suffered from arthritis, had a very serious crisis that left him almost totally paralyzed. We had to lift him out of bed, sit him in his chair, feed him, bathe him, and so on. One day when I came back from school I found him walking around, very happy, saying that he had been healed. He told me that while he was sitting in his chair he heard a man on the radio say that someone was suffering from arthritis and that they were going to pray for his healing; the only thing this man asked was that people place their hand on top of the radio. My father did so, thinking he had nothing to lose. Miraculously, that day the arthritis disappeared forever, but a curiosity was born in him to find out what had happened. In his eagerness to find the cause of his joy he began asking all the religious people he knew, and all of them offered him studies, plans of salvation, and so on. I could not believe that my father, who used to be so anti-religious, was so interested in ALL religions, but I accompanied him in the studies he had with the Mormons, the Assemblies of God, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the Rosicrucians. We had many versions of the Bible at home that my father wanted to compare in order to find out what the difference was between them. With the Jehovah’s Witnesses we studied by reading the Bible, since that had been the condition my father had imposed. The reason he did not want to use the Witnesses’ books was that we had had some neighbors who, before 1975, had told us that in that year the existing system of government would come to an end, and they tried to prove it by reading us magazines and books indicating that everything would happen in 1975; for that reason the study we had was with the Bible alone. After studying the first 6 chapters of Matthew, comparing the three versions of the Bible, we could see that the person giving us the study was very confused. One day he asked me to lend him my Bible, because he wanted to consult something with the elders; that was the last time I saw my treasured Bible. What this person did manage to do was give us the habit of buying the magazine “Awake!” At the age of 17 I accepted Jesus as “my only personal Savior” in a Baptist church. The reason I did so was because they believe that Jesus is God, a conclusion I had reached after reading the Gospels. But even though I attended the Baptist church, I kept studying with the Witnesses and read the Awake! magazine with even greater interest because of its very anti-Catholic articles, which served me well when I went out to “preach” with the Baptists all over El Salvador. After three years the Witnesses stopped coming to the house, since the person who gave me the study moved away and no one wanted to replace him without using books such as “The Truth That Leads to Eternal Life.” After many years with the Baptists, I met at the university the woman who was to become my wife, a very Catholic young lady who explained to me what she believed. I was deeply impressed to learn what the Catholic Church taught about marriage, since the pastor of the Baptist church had begun to teach that divorce did not matter if one believed one had not married the spouse God had assigned. The pastor said all this because he was being unfaithful to his wife; when he announced that he was going to divorce, that was when I stopped attending that church. I got married in the Catholic Church to please my wife’s parents, but I never attended a Mass after my wedding. As you know, there was a bloody war in El Salvador, and because of it many people decided to leave the country. My wife, my little daughter, and I moved to Australia, and before long I began buying the magazine “Awake!” again, but, as I had done before, I refused to have studies or to visit the Kingdom Hall. After a year and a half of living in Australia, my 3-year-old daughter became so ill that she spent 5 days in the hospital under observation; at the end of that time no doctor knew what had happened. A friend told us that perhaps it was the Lord who was calling us. I promised my wife that we would go to some church the following Sunday (in my mind I was thinking of a Baptist church). It was on a Wednesday, in July of 1993, that while walking in the city we saw a group of people preaching in the streets, and I went up to them to ask where they met. To my surprise, they were Catholic novices, who invited me to a charismatic meeting and to a Mass after the meeting. Because of the promise I had made to my wife, I accepted the invitation. There are no words to explain the joy it gave me to meet such Christian people, who cared for us so lovingly during the meeting and at the Mass. A few days later I received a visit from the novice who had preached to us in the street, who came to invite us again to the charismatic meeting. That day I explained to him that I could not keep attending because I had been a Protestant and did not believe in the Catholic faith. When the novice told me that he had been a Protestant too (his father is still a minister in a Protestant church) and that one of the priests had been a Baptist missionary, I decided to attend a Catholic study they give for those who want to enter the Church. Learning the history of the Church and what the Church believed convinced me that it was the place where I ought to be, but I found it hard to believe in the Virgin, the saints, purgatory, and so on. After receiving the study I was invited to a charismatic retreat, where it was expected that I would receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The retreat ended and, unlike everyone else who attended, I received nothing; I felt so depressed and angry that I decided to speak with the priest who was going to celebrate the Mass that closed the retreat, but since the Mass was about to begin I had no time to express my disappointment with the retreat. I was so upset that I did not sing a single hymn, did not listen to the homily, and did not want to offer the sign of peace to anyone. At the moment of receiving Communion, I felt as if the Lord Himself were inviting me to partake of His Body; the moment I placed the host in my mouth I felt an indescribable peace and joy — I wanted to shout and to dance. I could not understand why everyone was so quiet, meditating; I wanted to shout that the Lord is present in Communion. The last hymn I not only sang but also danced. After that experience I wanted to know more and more about the Church. Through the Internet I found the biography of Cardinal Newman and also the story of Scott Hahn’s conversion, plus some studies about purgatory, the saints, and so on. Later I found this page of yours (apologetica.org), which helped me learn more about our Church (in my own language) and realize the falsehood that exists among the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Needless to say, I no longer read any of their publications, which I now find so offensive and full of lies. And if I feel doubt in my heart, I ask the Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit to enlighten me and fill me with their wisdom. May God bless you abundantly, Author: Adolfo Morán Source: Apologetica.org
