Every Sunday we joyfully proclaim the Creed during the celebration of the Eucharist. We have done so for many centuries.

In this time of so much confusion, with churches and sects appearing like a religious marketplace, it is important to discover that what Catholics believe is the FAITH OF ALL TIMES; it is the Creed of the Bible.

I BELIEVE IN GOD. “Our God is the only Lord” (Deuteronomy 6:4; Mark 12:29)

THE FATHER ALMIGHTY. “What is impossible for human beings is possible for God” (Luke 18:27).

CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST. “He is the radiance of God’s glory, the very image of what God is” (Hebrews 1:3).

HIS ONLY SON. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die, but may have eternal life” (John 3:16).

OUR LORD. “God has made him Lord and Messiah” (Acts 2:36).

WHO WAS CONCEIVED BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will rest upon you like a cloud. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God” (Luke 1:35).

BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY. “All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’)” (Matthew 1:22-23).

HE SUFFERED UNDER PONTIUS PILATE. “Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged. The soldiers wove a crown of thorns, put it on Jesus’ head, and dressed him in a dark red cloak” (John 19:1-2).

WAS CRUCIFIED. “Jesus went out carrying his cross, to the place called ‘the Place of the Skull’ (which in Hebrew is called Golgotha). There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side. Pilate had an inscription put on the cross, which read: ‘Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews’” (John 19:17-19).

DIED AND WAS BURIED. “Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, ‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit!’ And when he had said this, he died” (Luke 23:46). After taking him down from the cross, they wrapped him in a linen cloth and laid him in a tomb cut in the rock, where no one had yet been laid (Luke 23:53).

HE DESCENDED TO THE DEAD. “As a man, he died; but as a spiritual being, he was brought back to life. And as a spiritual being, he went and preached to the spirits in prison” (1 Peter 3:18-19).

ON THE THIRD DAY HE ROSE AGAIN FROM THE DEAD. “Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures; he was buried and rose on the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN AND IS SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY. “The Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God” (Mark 16:19).

FROM THERE HE WILL COME TO JUDGE THE LIVING AND THE DEAD. “He commanded us to proclaim to the people that God has appointed him judge of the living and the dead” (Acts 10:42).

I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT. “Because God has poured his love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Romans 5:5).

I BELIEVE IN THE CHURCH, WHICH IS ONE. “That they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be one in us, so that the world may believe that you sent me” (Jn 17:21; Jn 10:14; Eph 4:4-5)

IT IS HOLY. “Faith confesses that the Church… cannot fail to be holy (Eph 1:1). Indeed, Christ, the Son of God, who with the Father and the Spirit is proclaimed ‘alone holy,’ loved the Church as his Bride (Eph 5:25). He gave himself up for her to sanctify her, joined her to himself as his own body, and filled her with the gift of the Holy Spirit for the glory of God” (Eph 5:26-27). The Church is therefore “the holy People of God” (1 Pet 2:9), and her members are called “saints” (Acts 9:13; 1 Cor 6:1; 16:1).

IT IS CATHOLIC. “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church; and not even the power of death will be able to overcome it” (Matthew 16:18). She possesses the fullness that Christ gives her (Eph 1:22-23). She is catholic because she has been sent out by Christ on a mission to the whole of the human race (cf. Mt 28:19)

IT IS APOSTOLIC. The Lord Jesus endowed his community with a structure that will remain until the Kingdom is fully consummated. First of all there is the choice of the Twelve, with Peter as their head (cf. Mk 3:14-15); since they represent the twelve tribes of Israel (cf. Mt 19:28; Lk 22:30), they are the foundations of the new Jerusalem (cf. Rev 21:12-14). The Twelve (cf. Mk 6:7) and the other disciples (cf. Lk 10:1-2) share in Christ’s mission, in his power, and also in his lot (cf. Mt 10:25; Jn 15:20). By all these acts, Christ prepares and builds his Church. 2 Tim 2:2

THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS. “After this I looked, and there was a great multitude from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, so numerous that no one could count them” (Revelation 7:9).

THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them” (John 20:23).

THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY. “Christ will give new life to your mortal bodies” (Romans 8:11).

AND LIFE EVERLASTING. “There will be no night there, and those who live there will need no lamp or sunlight, for the Lord God will give them light, and they will reign forever and ever” (Revelation 22:5).

AMEN. “So be it. Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).
